When Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he and Najib Tun Razak had made a deal about when the latter will take over the leadership of Malaysia, no one asked the right question!

One experience mainstream editor merely said “It’s a done deal” and another ex-editor asked “When?”. As if that is the only thing that matter.

Now you know why the media is in such a pathetic state like it is today. Every news fall into people’s morning tables or lazy laps just like that!

No one asked if it is even legitimate for Abdullah to make such a statement. Had he consulted other UMNO members? Had he even broach the subject with other BN component parties, or are they now non-existent, after the March 8 Tsunami?

Sadly no one ever considered any of these questions.

But in “Are we a democracy or a feudal state?”, lawyer Charles Hector asked in his blog if it is even constitutional for Abdullah and Najib to have come to this decision all on their own.

It looks like the two not-so-gentlemen may have even insulted the Yang Di Pertuan Agong by going against the Federal Constitution:

In Article 43 of the Federal Constitution — and it says that it is the “…Yang di-Pertuan Agong shall first appoint as Perdana Menteri (Prime Minister) to preside over the Cabinet a member of the House of Representatives who in his judgment is likely to command the confidence of the majority of the members of that House…” – it is the Yang Di-Pertuan Agung that appoints the PM – not the current PM who decides on the next PM…and here Abdullah is reported stating that there was an agreement —

Hector asked: Is this is not an action that demonstrates disrespect to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Is it also not an action (….an agreement) that is in breach of our very own Federal Constitution?

Our highest law of the land, the Federal Constitution, is also clear that the only consideration before appointment by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is that the candidate for PM is “…likely to command the confidence of the majority of the members of that House[i.e. the Dewan Rakyat]…”

Do the two individuals think they have the support of the majority or are even liked or respected by Malaysians?

We only know that there are not enough UMNO divisions who are courageous enough to nominate someone who will challenge Abdullah or even his deputy.

I hope Karpal Singh or someone else will make a police report aganst the two power crazy duo!

A: If this is all okay than I can resign by 16 Sept but one last thing you must let me keep the Tongkat Ali garden the Jane help me to plant.

Even PR is a filmsy coalition waiting to melt-away because of PAS which will surely impose its islamic ideology once in power after ousting BN. So the old saying “strange bedfellows” is certainly true for PR, in our quest for political change we have to choose between the devil and deep blue sea unless the Constitution is amended to protect us of the religious and racial classification. It would even be far-sighted to start a movement for Malaysia to be a republic which would further guarantee equal rights to all citizens and do away with a nation divided by awarded-titles, race and religion, this will eventually happen but only after scotching the country of all its wealth, peace and harmony. Its really up to the citizens to throw out the unworthy and put in the worthy. Its already happening only hope it does not stop with the eventual coming into power by PR. For now the people have already realized that the power of change is in their hands not in their elected representatives.

  19. donplaypuks says:

    Susan

As much as I am no supporter of BN, AAB or Najib, I really think you are scraping the barrel with this ‘insult to the King’ headlines. This is sheer nonsense!

Political parties do not need the King’s approval for them to discuss or put in place a clear line of succession to party leadership. This is a must not only for stability within the country, but also in so far as foreign investors are concerned.

Thus, AAB’s anointing of Najib is in line with time hounoured practices here, as well as internationally. There is nothing sinister in it or the announcement, except of course ‘when the time is right’ is a bit of a cop out.

But, whether, when the time comes the King will accept Najib’s nomination, is of course another matter. In practice, in our history, no King has ever blocked a PM’s candidature. if there is an objection later, then we will cross the bridge when we come to it!

In the meantime, we know you have an axe to grind against Najib vis-a-vis the Altantuya court case. But don’t let your perception of something come across as though you have evidentiary proof of criminal culpability.

It’s always wise to be a little circumspect.

    Abdullah’s fuel-hike move falls short

From The Straits Times Southeast Asia correspondent Leslie Lopez

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi’s scramble to stem the widening fallout from his high-stakes gamble to raise fuel prices is exposing his government’s shortcomings in crisis management.

What’s more, the policy flip-flops and the raft of poorly-designed counter-measures have only brought into focus the distortions in the Malaysian economy and Datuk Seri Abdullah’s reluctance to confront the powerful vested interest groups that profit from it.

The government’s missteps have also allowed the Opposition headed by former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to seize the initiative with public sentiment building against the government.

Don’t you know that as the President of UMNO, he acts like a supremo? All those below him must tow the line or else they will be removed. Is this called the traditional democracy of UMNO?

Leadership succession in UMNO has always been the Deputy must be able to learn to acquire the highest degree of tolerance and endurance. If he cannot wait for the leader to retire or step down, he had better leave before he gets booted out. Any utterance otherwise will lend him in profanity. You think under the circumstance, NR will dare openly defy AAB?

As I see it, the leader has wide sweeping power and that corrupts absolutely. Just imagine someone were to pass a vote of no confidence on AAB at the coming UMNO Asembly! In my view, it will not happen. If it ever happened, some if not many heads will roll before the Asembly!

That is the legacy the membership is not happy about. Don’t they realise that the quota system was purposely engineered to protect the position of the presidency.
Did any of the past Presidents of UMNO ever follow the Constitution or respect the King? When they have to protect and perpetuate their position, they will care more of their own security than anything else.

Do you think at the moment, AAB and NR have any respect for the King? My guess is as good as anybody’s else.

Oh, my God, what an amazing declaration by our courageous Raja Petra. I salute you for your moral courage, rarely found in most people and leaders of the world.

DPM’s wife was at the scene of Altantuya’s murder! Goodness gracious me. That declared allegation is very incriminating and demonising for both DPM and his wife.

With the three boxes of evidences purportedly and or reportedly in the possession of Ezam, DPM and his wife will be facing a tough time to stand straight to face the Rakyat. With such a tainted character who is the declared presumptive PM of Malaysia, how can Malaysians allow DPM to move around so freely and doing his work as if nothing has or will happen to him?

If DPM has any dignity or modicum of pride left, he must resign from his position until his case is absolutely cleared.

In the light of the revealing circumstances, AAB, if he has any prior knowledge that his deputy’s wife was at the scene of the murder of Altantuya, he must do what he has to do as leader of the country; and that is, to exercise the power invested in him to either suspend his deputy or sack him and direct the appropriate authority to investigate and and indict him if there is sufficient evidence.

    God saves Malaysia from ignominy.
