Have you sign this memorandum for a truthful press? I am the 100th signatory!

I received this from blogger Lucia Lai, one of the hard-working representative of BENAR, free media advocacy group. BENAR says:

Concerned Malaysians are working hard to collect as many signatures as possible for the 2008 Memorandum on Media Freedom – sponsored by Benar for Free and Fair Media (Benar), Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ), National Alliance of Bloggers (All-Blogs) and Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI).

The Memorandum, together with the signatures collected until 30 August, 2008 shall be presented to the national leaders on August 31, 2008 and to state leaders on September 16, 2008 to demand for reforms in media laws. This project will be weaker without your support. We hope you will place this image link on your blog to help promote the cause.

There can be no free nation without free media. Let us come together to demand media freedom as the birthday present for our beloved nation.

For non bloggers, you are encourage to support us by posting about the memorandum in forums or newsgroup.

Thank you very much for your support and attention.

In our love of the nation and freedom,
All-Blogs, Benar, CIJ and WAMI

thanks for putting this up, susan.

the above statement was not ‘said’ by me. it was done mostly by chin huat of WAMI, with editing from johann foo from BENAR, and all of us in the benar e-group agree on it, so it is sort of a joint statement from all of us.

oh thanks also for changing the design of your blog! it feel so much more better (and relief to the eyes) to read your blog now.

    Ok Lucia;
    I corrected it.

In this internet age, there’s no other way not to bless media freedom. Can’t fight them, join them. PM, as a sign of good faith approve the media freedom request. If PM don’t do it, the next government, namely PR will do it anyway. It is only a matter of time.

    Dear Susan,

I suggest that the petitioner submit their real name,IC to authenticate the reality if the sender just like what Haris Ibrahim’s format and without revealing their true name on public (display on the internet) view.

Imagine, if I use this loveable nick, Sufiacumlately, anyone would have thrown it to the bin.

if you go to the benar.org site, you would have notice that is exactly what we did. the petitioner has to fill in his/her real name with his/her IC no, and there’s no where for you to be able to see who had signed up (not revealing the true names/ic in public).

in fact at the recent media walk/talk, where we also collected signatures, there were many who signed up without IC nos, sadly we can’t use their signatures.

How can we have freedom of the press in Malaysia when all news in the newspapers have undergone “screening and filtration”. AAB himself admitted to this fact when he lost GE12. He admitted that he has controlled the press and the broadcasting stations but forgot about the web. This self-admission makes me wonder what I am reading in the papers is ever the truth. Luckily there is the alternative source of news via the web!
