After months of arrogance, saying that we do not have an economic crisis, deputy premier Najib Tun Razak unveils a ‘RM60b stimulas package’. We have liars with no end running this country.
After months of telling us we are ok, no need to worry, now they slap our faces with RM60B that we can’t see or touch! Can we believe this to be true?
This comes in an opportune time where there is only weeks to go before PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi hands him the country’s reins.
The package, says many, are short sighted, and only goes to show that the PM in Waiting wants a political kick out of this.
The problem with this country is the lost of confidence and trust that most people, especially investors have in our systems, from the police to the judiciary and the executives.
Can the stimulus package address these issues? How will it be implemented? Just dangling RM60B in front of the people’s eyes do not count for anything if we are not going to sniff a cent of it!
It seems not. What it addresses, the way I see it, is more goodies for the ‘right’ people, contractors will political links, etc.
I had the same question as Penang CM Lim Guan Eng “Where will all this money come from”. But I add: Where will it go to?
With BN’s habit of nepotism, cronyism and corruption, do I need to ask more?
We treat migrant workers with disdain, but this package wants to offer ‘professionals’ with PR status. If they have 2milRM to invest that, is.
With such low investor confidence, I do not know how this would work.
I believe the announcement of “60 Billion” itself has made people dizzy.
With so much negative responses to this financial package by Najib, I wonder what else we can expect from him once he becomes PM.

I’ll try to be fair – its not all bad. There are good things in the package, some same old bad stuff, and nothing, zilch, zero, directly for the working person struggling to feed their family.
The SMI assistance was good, but a lot depends on how the money is disbursed. Such similar funds have been notoriously difficult for those without “official cables” to apply for in the past.
Tax incentives to companies can be good. It will encourage those companies which do make a profit (yes, there are, even in this tough times) to reinvest their earnings.
Allowing companies to write back 2009 losses against 2008 profits for taxation purposes, is good, but the amount allowed is small. The double taxation allowance for companies hiring retrenched workers is good.
Infrastructure spending can be good, but the economic impact is slow, and limited, because we’ll just be hiring Indonesians and Bangladeshis. And, I suspect the bulk of the of the contracts will go to UMNO “kakis”.
The equity support is stupid, in the current worldwide economic situation. Another Valucecap exercise ?
Hiring more civil servanst is dumb…..the bloated civil service is one of the causes of our lack of competitiveness. Under-worked Napoleons end up constantly dreaming up new skim kaya for themselves, and new regulations to make things difficult for common folks.
The only direct cash available in the whole mini-budget was the RM 5k payout for trading in your rustbucket for a Proton or Perodua.
No direct help for families.

Malaysia’s massive 16.2 billion dollar stimulus package met with scepticism Wednesday, as analysts questioned if it will avert recession and how cleanly it will be implemented.
Standard Chartered said despite the size of the plan, “its ability to keep 2009 growth in positive territory remains in question” and that the deficit, which will jump to 7.6 percent this year, could threaten credit ratings.
ING was unimpressed by the big-spending initiative, saying it expected the economy to contract by 2.2 percent this year, and that the government’s political woes raised the risk of inappropriate spending.
“The political situation makes us think a lot of the spending will be politically-directed,” it said.
Anwar, who has predicted a 2.0 percent contraction in 2009, said massive retrenchments and unemployment were expected in the months ahead.
“Clearly we are in the recession already. The government has refused to acknowledge it,” he told a press conference.
Analysts at Citibank also said the market would be disappointed with the package after “the hype created over the past few weeks”.

The whole point of a stimulus package is to stimulate the economy and in the current dire economic outlook, this would mean a broad based stimulus. Putting money into a broad cross section of the society. The stimulus package as it is would have been a laugh out loud joke if the situation was not so serious. It looks more of like a “strengthening my political position” type of budget. What little there is for the general public is just crumbs restricted with all kinds of criteria. I fear for Malaysia…

I like to take a small comparison between Malaysia and Australia. Both have about the same population. Australia economy is about the size of Asean. The govt have already acted on the 2nd. Stimulus package and yet, the unemployment is still rising, touching above 5% currently and is expected to go as far as 7%. Both the stimulus packages are people friendly, many still find difficulty in avoiding retrenchment…but, Australia have a safety net for the for the below average in their welfare system. In other words, no one will die of starvation. Can Malaysia do the same.?
Australia is rich with natural resources and fully protected them with proper regulation for future generations. A Agriculture based country which will have great demand in the world market.
Malaysia except on petroleum a God’s gift have to compete in their manufacturing industries. How well will we stand up against emerging giants like China, India and to a lesser extent Vietnam and Thailand…not very promising if gauging from the present performances. More of our foreign investors will eventually leave for a better environment to establish their businesses.
How much of this 2nd stimulus package from our Finance Minister will tackle the obvious problems already faced by other countries?

Last month, So call Persatuan Bekas-Bekas Tentera went all out to collect donation from factories and companies (they say to buy wheel-chair)… guess who call on their behalf.. TAX DEPARTMENT.. what does tax dept have to do with these persatuan.. more puzzling is that donation suppose to be free from limit but they insist we donate atleast RM2,500.00..

If Najis and UMNO is in Power it is most likely that the nation’s coffers would be decimated and there will be nothing left for our Children’s Children, therefore make sure the UMNO along with all their goons are thrown out the next election.

I agreed with most of the views here, Great !. Yes Susan, you put the question rightly, wonder where the money will be going to. With Najib, it is like asking the robber to take care of the bank vault. As the FM,he seem to have the freedom to spent the money the way he wants, EPF will be the ATM machine for BN/Umno run regime.. Lets hope at least 1/2 of the 60B reaches the mass and people …a big chunk of the stimulus package will be gone before it reaches the intended party.. everyone knows because thats what is happening in Bolehland.. anything goes..! Najib will bankrupt the nation by the time he steps down ( if he becomes the PM ), he does not instill confidence in the people and with his character badly tainted by the Altantuya’s case and all the corruption cases hanging on his shoulder, it will be hard press to see how he will drive the country out from the storm… May God Bless the Country!!!
