So, to all those senior citizens out there in Penang: have you registered with the state government for your RM100? It’s called the Senior Citizen Appreciation program. And if you are wondering how they are going to pay you, well, they’ll be sending cash vouchers to your home address. How about that? Is this convenient or not?

I spoke to some senior citizens and their response you will see in my story in www.malaysiakini.com later.

But here, let me share with you Penang chief minister’s Lim Guan Eng press statement on this:

The Penang state government has decided to post the RM 100 Senior Citizens Appreciation program to the recipients at their home address. This is to facilitate the disbursement of such funds and reduce inconvenience caused to senior citizens of having to take the trouble to go to the PR wakil rakyat’s constituency to receive the RM 100 funds. The RM100 will be posted after the launching of the Senior Citizens Appreciation Program in Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang on 21.3.2010.  A letter by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will also be enclosied  as follows.

Dear Sir/ Mdm,

Penang Senior Citizens Appreciation Program of RM100 Annually

As a people-centric government, the Penang Pakatan Rakyat (PR) State government continually endeavours to listen to the people, do the people’s work and give hope to all. A people-centric government can be achieved through 3Es-to enable, empower and enrich the people.

  • Enable the people with the skills, knowledge and education to provide equal opportunity for all to create wealth.
  • Empower the people with fundamental rights, basic freedom and responsibilities with full observance for the rule of law.
  • Enrich the people by sharing wealth and economic benefits to persue socio-economic justice.

For the first time in Penang’s history, senior citizens above 60 years old residing in Penang shall receive RM100 annually. This is a symbolic gift from the Penang PR State government to all senior citizens for their contributions and efforts that have allowed Penang to enjoy its success today whether in the field of socio-economy or unity in diversity amongst our plural society.

The Penang PR state government can afford to do so as we have been rigorously adopting a prudent budget, strict savings and good governance based on CAT- Competency, Accountability and Transparency. CAT governance has gained recognition from international bodies such as Transparency International that praised a state government in Malaysia for the first time ever. The 2008 Auditor-General’s report also praised the success of the Penang PR State Government in turning around a projected 2008 Budget deficit of RM35 million to a record surplus of RM88 million and a projected 2009 Budget deficit of RM40 million to a surplus of RM77 million.

We regret that our political opponents have tried to sabotage this RM 100 cash appreciation program by describing giving money to senior citizens as an act of bribery and corruption. However we shall continue with this program and are prepared to face any investigation or action by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Agency(MACC).

The RM100 cash appreciation to the senior citizens continues the Penang PR government’s tradition of giving to the people such as the RM100 water rebates to the nearly 170,000 low-income families in 2008-2009. Lest you think that you will be forgotten when you grow old- Remember that so long as Penang PR government exists, you will always be in our heart!

God Bless You!

Yours faithfully,

Lim Guan Eng ,Penang Chief Minister

Thirty years ago the then PM came out with the concept of Zero inflation when he argued for wage restraints. Yes the workers have to kept their side of the bargain by refraining from walkout and strikes which in any case are prohibited by law.But unfortunately the BN has not kept its side of the bargain to hold down inflation.

I returned to Malaysia in 2003 after working overseas for almost 22 years.Since that time, I am serious when I say that supermarket prices have at least doubled.Forget about services. I paid for my front gate RM1,500 in 2003. Just yeaterday I was damaged and wantes to replace it with the new one and the contractor quoted RM3,000.And this is not an automatic gate.

The RM100 we accept because we are in no position to look a gift horse in its mouth. But ralistically there must be some mechanism to to provide for regular adjustment to pensions. We are not asking for an increase by the inflation factor. Is it too much to ask for at least a 50% of inflation to be compensated.

hahahahahahaha…..Lim Eng Guan is indirectly exposing the hypocritical BN.
    Najib’s “1Malaysia”…fishing for young voters…also exposed.

  5. tan, tanjong bungah says:

    Hi everyone,

RM100 is a token of appreciation for the past services and contribution of senior citizens. Bravos to PR Pg State Govt for their CAT policy which through open tenders have given them some funds to share with the senior citizens and those in the ‘poverty’ group!

Why should Gerakan and BN object to this when for the 50 years that they run the Pg State Govt, they had never thought of such a scheme? Maybe, the direct tender negotiations they practised then were too costly – costly not to them but to the rakyat. So much so that they had no money left after they and their cronies had siphoned off the ratepayers’ money! Or were they reluctant to give the senior citizens this token as it meant that they had less to share amongst themselves then!

LGE and his team are certainly on the right track…they should keep the momentum going..with this rate,BN will be hard press to match their vigour and intelligence..come what may..PKR should hold court and proceed with their caring plans to help the layman..13th GE should see PKR being re-elected again especially in Penang..Congrats to LGE for their initiative and capability …!

  7. Menyalak-er says:

Nice illustration, Susan. But RM100/= ain’t gonna buy us that cute bikini.
Kudos’ to LGE for the pensioner’s payout – though it might not seem much today, it’s the thought that counts and a savvy way to really look into the demographics. Only thing is that Penang needs more facilities for the older generation, infirm and disabled. The new building byelaws may need some tweaking.
    Peeg making any sense?

Penang Senior Citizens Appreciation Program of RM100 ANNUALLY!!!
All the Pembangkang Rakyat (PR) Supporters are singing PRAISES to LGE!!!
    RM100/Year = 0.2739726sen/Day!!!
    What a JOKE…!!!

  11. Menyalak-er says:

    “What a JOKE…!!!” Another Rakyat.
Why? Has the Be-end ever given you back 0.0000001 sen/day back? They tax us like crazy and what do they give back – tolls depan dan belakang, bureaucracy ad infinitum, rude counter clerks, tidak apa gomen fleas, teh tarik cops, deteriorating security, u-turns to all major policies, blah, blah…
Look at the joke and you’ll be amazed how ‘rich’ your ranting has become!

  12. wits0 says:

Another Rakyat, a token like such is a good gesture and creates goodwill and it reaches out to all the relevant parties that it is intended.

The Be-end has been hard nose mean all along except for those occasions of selective bribing of (old)voters. Dr “character-raped” Ng YY was giving out such in the last election, e.g.

So, AR, you are going nowhere with your skewered view.

  13. Ho Ho Ho says:

Rm100 eventhough annualy is a good gesture. And its conviently posted in their letter boxes.

Perhaps LGE, in the near future there should be discounts or special privilages for the seniors. Like what’s being done in Oz, UK, Germany & so forth…….!

Like for medical, public transport, etc.., etc…….
These are their daily requirements & it will help a lot.

Anyway, thanks for starting the ball rolling…. (if it rolls)!!!!!!

  16. wandererAUS says:

Not just money…perhaps, via some charitable organizations (private sector participating)take the initiative arranging short daily outings. Having healthy activities will keep these old blokes with a healthy body and mind!

It is good news that my application for the RM100 had been approved. Thanks to YAB LGE & company. At least, this RM100 is very handy now to me for my stationeries to write to Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) reminding JPK on its effectiveness and incompetence with respect to the delay of more than six (6) months in replying to my letters. I had spent more than RM100 for stationeries writting letters to JPK since 08-09-2009.

  21. Menyalak-er says:

True. But the ‘peopless’ be-end ain’t gonna drop dead without kicking, fussing, screaming and generally causing mayhem, before our amens(so be it) are fulfilled!

  22. AcHoo! says:

However good a gesture there’s always be someone who will sneer at the amount. Still such gesture will do the most for the really poor. For those who are doing fine you can pass the amount to your favourite charity.
That Teng fellow can sneer that is just bribery. If Gerakan had bribe the Penang folks instead of lining his UMNO lords’ pocket they would still be in power.

With low interest in the bank for so long, pensioners have suffered enough. It is good to see someone at least still appreciate the contributions of those “have-beens”.
Surely, this young guy is smart and beats PM in showing his care.
Come on, PM when are you going to raise the bank interest rate to help the pensioners or give them another $100/month to beat this young guy?

Another Rakyat ….You’re a Joker …What has BN been doing all these years? They have been robbing the country and swindling the rakyat’s money over the decades..the elite umno group have been enriching themselves while the layman struggles to put a decent meal on the table for his family.. PKR at least have started off something worthwhile for its people no matter how small it is..the country would have been better off then what it is now…under BN rules!!!..

What this Jogoya Restaurant did, as reported, is so wrong. Maybe Malaysians who are for human rights and worker rights should BOYCOTT Jogoya.until :-
    a) All workers are immediately reinstated as workers without loss of benefits,
    b) The employer returns all wrongful deduction from wages,
    c) All these workers be allowed to work until at the very least the end of their contract period, and the employer pays for the necessary airfare back home, etc…

  35. k c low says:

At least LGE gave something to the senior citizens of Penang. What has BN given to the Rakyat all these years – misery for more than 50 years. Th interesting question here is: by giving your vote to PR – PR works for the rakyat. By giving your vote to BN, you will have to work for BN like a dog. Think carefully in the 13GE and vote for PR.
