The story of rape of Penan girls and women is most appalling, but worse still is the government’s delayed response and police inaction.

Are we becoming a nation without conscience nor humanity? I believe you know the answer to that.

The perpetrators must be brought to court at once, the victims need to be rehabilitated and the human and development conditions of the Penan community needs to be immediately investigated.

Please read FORUM-ASIA’s statement here and give your support to this issue in any way you can.

Not only Penan women, but also in Pahang at Orang Asli villages the lorry drivers have parties with women in exchange for tobacco and less than 1$osmah.
    Some NGO must investigate this.

  3. monsterball says:

First they need to check..those rapists are UMNO .. MCA or MIC members.
Making sure…not so….they will act very fast…but while arresting…found out they made mistakes and those culprits are actually UMNO members….all released….saying ..no solid evidences.
That’s how things are done by Police…guided by IGP…who is guided by Najib.

  4. monsterball says:

Some Penan women are prostitutes too.
Do not mix school children being raped by pointing out…some those out in the open and mixed with lorry drivers.

  5. najibmustdie says:

    monsterball,

Let the NGOs investigate that. Dont simply throw the word prostitution around, this matter in Pahang is where the lorry drivers convert them into prostitution. They should be in school not servicing lorry drivers who can get it in the towns.
Why did the police shut down the “Black Cat” hideout near St. John`s school at one time where primary school girls were paid for their services if it was not wrong?

Why are we forcing our feudalistic civilisation on this Penan people .. we alredy forced our culture on them to give up headhunting.. now we trying to force them out of they way of life by punishing rapist. Leave them alone.. they have they own sense of justice.. do we want them on a reservation like what the white man did to the red indians? Leave the ancient culture in peace.

In September 2008, news broke out that Penan girls, some as young as 10 years, were being sexually abused by logging workers in the Middle Baram area of Sarawak. However, local politicians and the police were quick to dismiss these as mere allegations without any basis……

The Associated Press reported that Huzir Mohamed, the head of Sarawak’s police criminal investigations department, probed three complaints last year but found “nothing with proper evidence for us to proceed in court.” Huzir also insinuated that this was due in part because “the activists did not give specific details to support their claims”.

We take offence to this statement and perception. We maintain that it is the police who have dragged their feet in this matter before back-pedalling on their earlier willingness to work with NGOs on this matter.

Who allowed the rape of the jungle where the tribe lived?

Besides horrific inhumanity of destroying the ecosystem that provided food and shelter, they abused the defenceless Penans and other indigenous people and raped their women did they not?

What was the pretext of building the idiotic Bakun Dam in Baram?

Where has all the profit gone to from all this logging, into taxes or to tiongs, dings and other taikors with substanstial cut to Taih?

Why was it difficult for OCPD to get access to the Penans – scared of lintangs or lanuns or they can’t distinguish between the 2?

Rape is rape – a dehumanizing crime; child sexual abuse is even worse – you mean to tell me that an adult can’t recognize a child of 10-12 yrs old? Prostituition has nothing to do with this.

While other Sarawak ministers and others want action to be taken against the perpetrators, Jabu instead accused the federal government report of being influenced by non-governmental organizations who were against logging in that state.

Thus, he is the odd man out on this serious issue.

“Although I have not seen the actual report from a task force set up by the federal government, I believe negative NGOs are behind the report. There may be a report, but you must remember that negative NGOs were behind it,” Jabu reporters here.

(Channel News Asia) HONG KONG : Mafia threats aren’t the only reason why Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau decided to keep his relationship with long-time girlfriend, now wife, Carol Chu, a secret.

According to media reports, the Heavenly King had received an ‘indecent proposal’ by a Malaysian Datuk (an honorary title bestowed by the Sultan) to spend the night together after she became infatuated with the star.

While the 47-year-old politely declined her request, he kept his relationship with Chu under wraps to protect the latter. Last week, Lau came under fire for not acknowledging Chu to protect her after being threatened by the infamous Hong Kong mafia.

In 1983, Lau was just starting out his career with the hit television drama series “Return of the Condor Heroes”. His popularity was gaining all over Asia and won over the hearts of many female fans, reported Malaysia’s Guang Ming Daily.

As the television series exposed Lau to the Asian market, he often had to travel to Malaysia for promotional events and appearances. These were often well attended and it was at one of these events that the Datuk came to know of Lau.

Regarding Lau as the “man of her dreams”, the Datuk was present at every event in which he appeared. She also often gained access backstage to get closer to him.

Lau was oblivious initially and thought that she was just an over zealous fan or one of the event organisers in charge of autographs and photo-taking sessions. Little did he know that she had expected much more.

Rejecting her request, Lau had told her the he “was tired and wanted to return to his hotel to rest”.

monsterball was trying to say that some of the Penan girls are prostitutes. Circumstances force them to cari makan in order to support their families. He did not mention prostitues should be raped. monsterball did not look down on them for sacrificing themselves. Prostitutes have dignity too. Anyway, any man making love with a consenting girl aged 16 and below is considered rape. Statutory rape.

I hope this struggle on this issue will be persistent until justice is done! This is highly critical, and such NGO coalition should also give a memo to EU, Japan & US Ambassadors, and campaign on this issue specifically, in the EU especially amongst EU NGOs since these countries are among the biggest exporters of Malaysian timber and palm oil. The spokesperson from the Penan rape victims can be brought to Europe to further campaign on this, through Bruno Manser Fond for example. The Church communities must also be more outspoken on this issue as most Penans are devoted Christians; I attended their church service in Long Sait in Upper Baram, which has no electricity. Priests, Nuns and church volunteers can also travel to remote Penan villagers, especially in educating Penan children, where many have dropped out of schools due to the remoteness and lack of basic infrastructure like public transport, discrimination due to their families anti-logging stance and the threat to their security. The Penans should have a right to this religious freedom and social help since political NGOS are banned from entering these villagers usually, by both the state and timber/plantation corporations. The traditional and poor Penans and from other ethnic groups like the Iban, Kenyahs and so on, need also such social humanitarian help, not just political help.

I would like to add further information. I was travelling to a few Penan villagers in Upper Baram who are resisting the logging/plantation corporations and found so much poverty! Unless they bowed down to the demands of these evil, greedy and ruthless corporations! Moreover, when I travelled to visit the hostel for Penan children from different communities in Long Lellang, I couldn’t believe the contempt, racism and discrimination that the Penan children (as young as seven years old) faced in the hsotel and school there. The hostel was dilapidated first of all; the children were made to sleep on wooden floors and the matresses were kept locked in a classroom, the children were fed non-nutritious food and many were thin and had skin disease; some were not even wearing shoes to school and wearing torn and dirty school uniform since they were forced to pay for these despite that the uniform and shoes are supposed to be free; teachers playing truant (why amny could not read and write even at std 6)and treating the parents with contempt, and the timber companies agents behaving like mafias by controlling the Long Lellang village and the school, with full co-operation of the Kelabit communities who are pro-logging. These timber/plantation corporations also intentionally stir up antagonism and hatred amidst different ethnic groups, between pro-logging and the anti-logging communities such as between the Penans and the Kelabits, or the Kenyahs in Long Tungan and the Penans in Long Sait.

I have complaint about this to the Federal Education Ministry and the PM office; but of course nothing is being done!

‘Divide and Rule’ is BN’s most effective weapon. It was so effective in West Malaysia until GE 12. Change will only happen if BN is voted out in GE 13. The people of Sabah and Sarawak were living harmoniously until big brother UMNO set up branches in Sabah and spread their influence in Sarawak. They created two new groups of bumiputeras – muslim bumiputeras and non-muslim bumiputeras. Now we have non-bumiputeras, muslim bumiputeras and non-muslim bumiputeras in East Malaysia.

  44. Katharina Sri (former: Noor Aza) says:

Yamashita, right on! Anyway, for further information: Many oor villages such as the Kelabits in Long Lellang or the Kenyahs in Long Tungan were forced to accept the logging in order to escape poverty in the first place. So, I can understand them in a way. This is how it works in that Mafia logging/plantation corporations control of Sarawak (with the consent of both the Fed and State govts of course!) : The basic public infrastructure such as roads, schools and clinics that should be provided by the both the Fed and State Govts are instead provided by these ruthless corporations. Thus, poor and remote villagers are at the mercy of these cororations – whether to accept or to be denied of such basic human rights! It’s ironic but sorrowful that in supposedly civilized and modern Malaysia, this could happen. West Malaysian activists should take the opportunity to try and travel to these remote villages especially in Upper Baram, to really see this injustice for themselves. But they must travel as tourists; or they won’t get through. Just take a flight from Miri to Long Lellang for example, but make sure that you book the return flight, travel with a few others and inform your relatives to check on you returning, or the Mafia agents will try to stop you from travelling home, as they tried to do to me. They tried to force me to travel back through trekking in the rainforest!

  48. Yamashita says:

    Dear Kathariina Sri,

In Malaysia anything is possible. That is the wonder of Bolehland, …except ‘things’ which are not favourable to BN regime. So the road to justice for the Penans is like driving up Mt Everest (the road here has yet to be built).

Hopefully with persistence, the NGOs will be able to force the government to take actions eventhough it is an uphill task.

The logging companies should take steps to control their workers and be responsible for the welfares of the natives victimised by their activities. Police reports should be lodged against those who committed crimes against humanity.

Their companies made millions of ringgit if not billions. I can’t see why they can’t spend 10 percent (unless a large portion has been siphoned off by … ) of their profits to improve the affected natives’ livelihood. Afterall they encroahed on the natives’ lands and profitted from the resources there. A socially responsible company is less likely to incur the wrath of all concerned.

    May justice prevail.
