These are what my friends in Bangkok are saying. And this is what Associate Professor Giles Ji Ungpakorn of Chulalangkorn University has said about the entire Bangkok-seige fiasco:

How did the PAD thugs manage to seize Bangkok International airport? Airports are supposed to be high security areas. Thai airports are controlled by the Thai military. It is obvious that the Thai military, who staged an illegal coup in 2006, have quietly supported the actions of the PAD. It is obvious that the military is unwilling to provide basic security to air travellers and air crew. But they are happy to rake in huge salaries associated with their control of the Airports Authority.

Foreign governments and airlines should reconsider whether the authorities in Thailand are willing to provide international standards of safety and security.

He continues with his criticisms against The People’s Alliance for Democracy:

The PAD is a Royalist Fascist mob which has powerful backing. Apart from the army, they are supported by the Queen, the so-called Democrat Party, the Courts, the mainstream media and most university academics. What these people have in common is a total contempt for the Thai electorate who are poor. They are angry that the Thai people voted for a government that gave the poor universal health care and other benefits. They want to turn the clock back to a dictatorship which they call “the New Order”. They are hoping that the Courts will now dissolve the ruling party and that an authoritarian “National Government” will be set up.

It is clear that the PAD, the Military, the Democrat Party and the Conservative Establishment would rather see total chaos in Thailand rather than allow democracy to function. This is despite the fact that we face a serious economic crisis. Interestingly the anti-government groups are extreme neo-liberals with little grasp about how to deal with the economic crisis or how to stimulate the economy. Apart from opposing welfare, they have attacked Keynesian policies of the previous Thaksin government.

Where is the King in all this? Throughout the 3 year political crisis, the King has never attempted to diffuse the problem. Many Thais believe he supports the PAD, but it is more likely that the Monarch has always been too weak to intervene in any crisis.

So what do pro-democracy and pro-social justice people do?

Those who support democracy and social justice in Thailand must condemn the PAD and those advocating a dictatorship. We must be with the pro-democracy Red Shirts, while refusing to support ex-PM Thaksin, who has a record of Human Rights abuses. I hope that all those friends of Thailand abroad will support all our efforts to defend Thai democracy and to defend those of us who may face arrest in the future.

The PAD or whatever abbreviation they used are imposing their views on the majority of Thai, with the collusion of their military & whatmore the blessings of the monarchy. If they are so concerned about the welfare of the country they went about it the wrong way. This is in complete contrast to what’s happening in Malaysia.

    Hi Susan,

looks like there is no good Government (now or previous) in Thailand? Is the nature of your job working for a Human Rights Organization in Thailand any help to the situation there or it’s just hazardous to your life? Just askin’.

support ajahn ungpakorn. thailand’s divided nation is worse off than malaysia’s. really taking a few steps back, thailand democracy.

nai couldn’t go to work on monday because of traffic jams caused by the protesters.

i know you’re all right and news reports of what’s happening there always seem worse from the outside.

on the bright side, maybe this is the reason you have been thwarted in your other plan…

fa should set up virtual office?

  4. Please! sloone, it’s time to find a conducive place to live in.

Thailand is a land for the Military.

Why don’t you shift your base to Melbourne? You are most welcome here.

there have been several bombings and so much killing happened in Thailand in the name of politics and religion.not to mention the tension and riot among supporters of incumbent Prime Minister and the former Prime Minister.

i’m sure many folks in Thailand still continue to carry on with their life as usual.i just hope things will run more steady there in Thailand in the future to come.

I propose a Buddhist monk to be PM. let’s see if any Thai dares to protest.

  7. Go to Australia, New Zealand or even Singapore where it is safer and also better daily live for you instead of Bangkok.
It is a country where the minority is trying to rule the country with the protest and the only solution is to put the leaders, who look like crooks anyway, behind bar or better still send them to Timbuktu. In case they do not know where Timbuktu is, it is in Mali, Africa.
Thailand tourism needs tourists more than the protest right now.

How can we help our pro-democracy friends in Thailand when we are ourselves in deeper shit with this umno government for 51 years. At least they don’t have this ketuanan melayu to deal with.

Welcome to Bizarre Thailand. Land of festive 24/7. The PAD in its obsession to sanitize Thailand of Taksin Shinawatra choose to ignore who would pick up the tab whoever becomes victor. The bill keeps piling.

Chamlong Srimuang – nothing to loose and maybe some of his dogs. Sure winner Sonthi “kotex” Limtongkul who has already turn ASTV from red to black. Aspiring Prime Minister Democrat Party Abihsit – the man who lends the knife to PAD and “hua mo” southerners who form the bulk of “sanitary PADs” are blinded by their affiliations to the Democrats. Will he has a chance to be Prime Minister. NO WAY! Not until some northerners or north easterners are “bought” by him (Abihsit).

During these turbulent times – Puyais. Civil servants. Army. Police. All of them sitting on the fence and business as usual.

Now virtually all government institutions are destroyed. Maybe Somchai Wongsawat should just hand power to PADs and called the new government RATTHI-BUCHA-SANITARY PAD.

You fellas better wake up. Even your touristy sex trade may soon give way to some more exciting palaces in China! Soon there will be no more charms and smiles.

Anyway for now enjoy the evergreen threesome – somtham-kawniew-kai yang.

Don’t have to worry for Susan. The Thai cops will greet you with both palm together in a peaceful protest.
Unlike in Bolehland, batons, shields and handcuff to greet peaceful candle vigils.

I think they have taken a little too far with taking over the airport. The truth is that:-
    1) Thaksin is guilty and should be thrown in jail.
    2) The government won the election fair and square. So what is this riot all about.
    3) My parents are in Bangkok and their flight is postponed until……..

DAP MPs and state assemblymen still do not realised they are in power today becoz the Malays voted them and now they are trying to be heroes to the chinese community only.

to the DAP dont you all are aware that alcohol are bad for health just like cigarette.

I am a chinese and i hate all the above habits.

Not all policies by PAS are bad.

in fact PAS has been urging bread earners to go back to their families after work instead of heading to all these karaokes joint where alcohol and chinadoll are in abundance.

i remember not very long ago a group of chinese housewife went to see a certain OCPD asking for help
becoz their husband have been spending all their time in all these karaokes outlet.

how many chinese families have succumbed to these evil ?

bread winner spending their hard earned money on alcohol, gambling and later on womanising will come along.

DAP remember you guys represent all malaysians and please do not try to be a hero to a certain community even though knowing very well all the above are bad for everyone.

carry on with your typical chinaman attitude and i can guarantee you guys will all be a one term MP/state assemblyman.

BTW NONE DAP MPs has responded.

tony pua may god protect your children from the evil of alcohol.

This Thai Royal household is F**king useless, imagine the government elected by the majority can be turned up side down by this small group of idot in yellow and yet the one living in the ivory tower didn’t blink an eye. How much $$ is wasted for the trouble created? They have no rights to call themselve Thai.

Yayaya…. Go back home and pray to the moon and become a moron and commit incest crimes. Look inwards before outwards.

Dap is a eunuch party destined to be a 1 term party.

Dap will pray to their eunuch god lks. Dap is either fighting for power internally or gaji buta.

Lks is a eunuch but behaves like god. Lks and dynasty will rule the country foever like a non extinct dinosaur.

  21. zoo negara says:

Dap and Lim Kit Siang belongs to the zoo. After 50 years, dap is still like living in a zoo.

Dap are like the MCA & Gerakan. They are traitors and should be kept in the zoo.

  22. zoo negara says:

Lks and daps are like orangutan in a Kuala Lumpur zoo, especially when they are wearing songkok!

  23. khfdews says:

These PAD thugs in Bangkok, unless taught a very painful lesson, are going to behave like the Mumbai terrorists next– seizing hostages, killing and burning. WTF is the Thai army, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, doing all this while? I suspect their generals are supporters of the PAD.

  24. cosmicmom says:

My fiance is in BKK since Monday on business and I’m concerned for his welfare. Are Westerners (he’s Brit) relatively safe at this time? (Except that he wore his Brazil soccer shirt on the street and I guess that’s the color the PAD is using. NOT a good move!)

  26. temenggong says:

It is obvious that the police, the army and the royalty do not like the present elected govt and are pushing for it to be removed. There is no rule of law. The king has overstepped himself and has overstayed his welcome since the last coup in 2006.

Susan please pass the word around in Bangkok that the king has lost favour with the international community and has to step down. There should be open calls for him to resign. It would be unprecedented!

  27. Lrong says:

Am stuck in Chiangmai… was supposed to return to Kansai via Bangkok… folks here are suggesting that I fly to Luang Prabang, then to Hanoi, and onwards to Kansai… flights out of Chiangmai to KUL, SIN, Seoul or Taipei are fully packed until mid December I am told…

Agree with many that the PAD is going overboard… public sympathy is thinning and I hope they will evaporate from the scene soon…
