For Moslems, it is a month to rejoice for God has bestow unto all moslems the chance to do good and be good without the interference of Satan. So, it IS right to wish HAPPY RAMADHAN.

THis is the month where the UMNO regime will congregate in fine hotels serving fine buffets for “buka puasa” to plan and scheme their devilish fitnah on the oppositions and to explore areas where corruption, nepotism and cronism can further be used in Budget 2009 to enhance their wealth and power.

THis is the fasting modus operadi of Islam Hadhari.

Still, i dont see it the way you do. RAMADHAN for me is not to rejoice..it is the month of inner BATTLE against one own demon. ALLAH provided the moslems with all the privillages ( more than other months) for them to achive the goal. After you succeed..then you have the whole month of SYAWAL/ Hari RAYA..to rejoice..and not before!

Ramadan is a very pure practice and it is holy pure to true Muslim only ..not to the hyprocrites and pretenders..

Don’t think that every sin of yours will be wash away and forgive by Allah..as there is a book of check and balance at the end of your life written by heaven and hell..

The celebration of victory Ramadan Berpuasa will only be meaningful if those who sins and confess their wrong doings whole heartedly and change immediately…nor not to be repeating it after the Raya celebrations..

I hereby wish every Muslim friends and readers a “Happy Ramadan” and wish all of you safe and do good..most importantly respect each other living beings in the universe…PEACE & MERCY!!!

So many ways to wish one and all Muslims….”Happy Ramadan” …with fine quotations and suggestions.
Then we ponder….some evil men have such a good blessed life….why so many innocent bystanders die like flies…why no stop sufferings for millions….that never utter a single word of hatred nor bad actions?
The only logical conclusion is..evil forces are much greater than the good ones..on earth.
Therefore…..I make it simple….I wish all Muslims can identify good hearted Malaysians and doing good deeds with no personal selfish benefits.
Then… when come to wish other Malaysians…on their religious days… same wish.
Then perhaps…we in Malaysia …..finally..have a chance to be united as one…and prosper together. …as one big family.
That is why..change of government is so important.
    Happy Ramadan to all Muslims!!

While Ramadan in Oman does not appear to be fundamentally different from what is witnessed in Malaysia and the rest of the Islamic world on this sacred occasion, it certainly has a unique touch here. Besides the distinctive culinary aspect, one notices a great deal of solidarity and generosity. An outsider’s initial impression might not help him/her perceive this sense of distinctiveness, but just ask anybody who has been to an Omani house for Iftar (breaking the fast) and you will be put in the picture. Certainly, hospitality and frugality rarely flock together! Though the invitation revolves essentially around food, it is indeed the gesture itself which is the quintessence of generosity and nobility. So, Ramadan is truly special here…More http://margeemar.blogspot.com

By the way, the Penang Bkt bendera’s chief Ahmad Ismail must apologize for his derogatory remark on the status of Chinese in Malaysia.

The PM must take stern action against him. The police must charge him under the Sedition Act as soon as possible.

Otherwise, it will be an act of discrimination and an insult to the authority due to selective prosecution.

If no action is taken by the police against this racist, it will definitely tarnish the good name and the good principles of Islam especially during the month of Ramadhan.

The year is 2008. This is the year most Malaysians finally woke up from a deep slumber. Most Malaysians were just too busy earning their living and building up their lives to take notice that times have changed and the idealism spouted by our founding Fathers have still not been accomplished for this country even today.

It was not so long ago in 1957 and then for our fellow East Malaysians in 1963 when the ideals and dreams preached by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj (Bapa Kemerdekaan and Bapa Malaysia) for Malaysia were first announced and was greeted with joy in the hearts and minds of all Malaysians. The late Tunku Abdul Rahman had a dream and ideals, just like Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and many others including the prophets over the history of mankind.

Many a times such dreams were hijacked and led astray under the guise of nationalistic, racist and religious idealism by so called politicians and self declared and appointed righteous and religious persons (Little Napoleons). Individuals who have risen to continue some of such idealisms are gagged, isolated, bankcrupted, blasphemied, rehabilitated or worst jailed, for it is deemed not in consonance with the dreams and idealism of the elected parties agendas.

    Gerakan shaddup:

Kelantan Umno today asked fellow Barisan Nasional (BN) component party Gerakan to stop demanding that Umno and the BN penalise an Umno division chief over his alleged racially sensitive remarks about the Chinese community.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, said the remarks by Bukit Bendera Umno Division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail were made in a personal capacity, similar to the statements by several Gerakan leaders who had wanted Gerakan to leave the BN.

“Gerakan has of late issued statements which threatened harmony in the BN but Umno leaders have been patient. But the moderation of Umno leaders, particularly Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, should not be taken advantage of,” he said in a statement.

Gerakan secretary-general Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye had yesterday asked Umno to take action against Ahmad, saying his remarks amounted to racial provocation and any sign of BN compromising with such leaders would send a wrong picture to the people. Similar sentiments were raised by Gerakan vice-president Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan.

Annuar said this was not the appropriate time for any party in the BN to make such demands as it could aggravate the situation, adding that that it was preferable for component party leaders to reflect and improve themselves.

  35. hutchrun says:

    The Gluttony of Ramadhan

The annual season of fasting and gluttony is at hand. It is the month of Ramadhan, the month the Prophet Mohammad had set aside for fasting and self-renewal, to praise the Almighty for His munifiscence, and suffer the pangs of hunger and deprivation that many suffer daily. Fasting is important in every religion. Christians have Lent, celebrated and marked as Muslims and Jews do; As do Hindus and Buddhist. In Islam, it is compulsory as it still is in many religions. But, with the good times, wealth and arrogance in us all, it is turned into a form, in which the reasons why the Prophet Mohamed ordained fasting is forgotten, and gluttony follows the 14-hour fasts.

In the cities of Malaysia, it is only that. Stalls are set up by the thousands all over the cities, all selling food. The fast is replaced at nightfall by unbridled luxury, gorging and waste. And those who enjoy this gluttonic repast do not think about, nor care for, the plight of tens of thousands of Muslims in Kuala Lumpur who have to make do with Kentucky Fried Chicken, not because they have money to spend, but that they do not have enough to buy local delicacies. I have seen a man going into a KFC outself to buy three pieces of chicken, one for each of his children, and their parents making do with a biscuit and water. No one pays any attention to him and his ilk. To Malaysians, it is to show how well they are, and how they cannot be seen to spend less on a ‘buka puasa’ than his neighbour.

It is as much to show off in conspicuous consumption what is lost in the Faith. What use is fasting if it is interspersed in unbridled gorging. Are the other tenets of Ramadhan followed? Especially when abstaining from sex is another tenet more honoured these days in the breach that in its observance. Ramadhan is now a marketing tool.

At a hotel lobby recently, there was this invitation to “break your fast with our special array of authentic Malaysian cuisine and a magnitude of sumptuous cuisine fromthe Middle East to an international fare lined up in our hawker style buffet” and “get to fulfill any cravings after a long day of fasting”. If that is not enough, there is the sahur buffet: “Enjoy our special sahur buffet between 3.00 am and 6.00 am with a wide spread of declicious dishes. A take-away menu is available with a choice of three menus, rice and fruits or our famed Hainanese chicken rice packed in a microwaveable container for a relaxed sahur meal at home.” What does this cost? RM39 for adults and RM25 for children for one and RM25 and RM18 for the other, with taxes and service not added. Which many a Malaysian do not earn in a day.

But in these hostleries, fasting has lost its meaning. It is a licence to indulge. The Muslim cabinet minsisters set the pace: each get a sizeable allowance equal to more than a year’s salary of an average Malaysian for both breaking fast and at the end of it. And they indulge. The nationally encouraged view that festivals are an excuse for gluttony is so ingrained that people are surprised that I do not even celebrate many of the festivals the government has decreed I, as a Hindu, should. The emphasis is on food. You have the Prime Minister’s wife feeding him when Hari Raya comes around, the MCA, Gerakan and MIC presidents feeding the Prime Minister on Chinese New Year and Deepavali respectively.

But is this feasting what these festivals are all about? During Deepavali recently, there were numerous television and radio shows, as no doubt there would be for other festivals, on how to make cakes and food and clothes to buy. We are encouraged to observe the national pastime to go into debt. And woe betide those who do not fall in line. It is considered anti-national if one does not spend what one does not have. As for Ramadhan, I, as a non-Muslim, do not find it honoured as it should. Feasting is the order of the day. It is now a business expense as well. And to show off to the neighbours that one can provide a feast they cannot. It is keeping up with the Joneses, Malaysian style.

The wasteful expenditure is, for many, a sign of arrival. I once attended a ‘buka puasa’ where the host, a middling civil servant, had invited 100 people. It must have set him back by at least RM10,000. And it was not the only one he had. One can only assume that this money to pay for it is “haram”, ill-gotten gains. But then so is many a Ramadhan feast. Often others pay for it for favours received or to come. But is this what Ramadhan is all about?

    Susan, about true fasting:

    Isaiah 58:3-8 (New International Version)

3 ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,
‘and you have not seen it?
    Why have we humbled ourselves,
    and you have not noticed?’
“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
    and exploit all your workers.

4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?

6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
    to set the oppressed free
    and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
    and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness [a] will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Malaysiakini : Special Branch probes defection rumours: Sarawak MP

A Sarawak parliamentarian has today spoken out strongly about the urgent need to end the long rule of the ‘arrogant’ Barisan Nasional government as rumours of potential crossovers pick up steam with Sept 16 only two weeks away.

The MP, an Iban who asked not to be identified, called Malaysiakini to say that Special Branch police officers had contacted him to check whether his name was linked to rumours of crossovers now making the rounds in Kuala Lumpur.

The rumours are related to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s plan to boost his Pakatan Rakyat’s parliamentary ranks with defections from the ruling BN parties to take over the federal government by Sept 16.

The MP told Malaysiakini that while he could not be enticed with money, he nevertheless wants to see political change since it will be for the good of Sarawak.

He also said that the top BN leadership no longer inspires the nation and has lost the confidence of the majority of Malaysians.

“They refuse to recognise realities even when they are heading for doom,” added the Iban MP, who is from a rural constituency in central Sarawak.

Party leaders briefedThe MP said the president of his Dayak-based BN component party had brief party leaders at a recent supreme council meeting on the latest political developments and indicated how they might have to respond when the time comes.

Despite fervent denials by the Sarawak BN leadership that the state component parties – PBB, SUPP, PRS and SPDP – are strongly united, there is little secret that the Dayak members within the ruling coalition are far from happy with the present power equation in the state.

Anwar has promised if Pakatan comes to power he would like to see a Dayak be chief minister, just as in Sabah where he had promised that a Kadazandusun would be CM if there is a change in government.

Sarawak’s first and second chief ministers – Stephen Kalong Ningkan and Penghulu Tawi Sli – were Dayak from the Iban community before Rahman Yakub, who is from the Melanau minority, took power in 1970 and he was followed by his nephew, Abdul Taib Mahmud, in 1981.

There are, according to rumours, at least half a dozen potential crossovers from Sarawak and that in Sabah, the number be as many as one dozen coming from at least three parties there.

(The Star) – SEGAMAT: A fight broke out at the Felda Palong Timur 5 Umno branch meeting after several members claimed they were unhappy with the results of the nominations.

Punches were traded and chairs thrown during the commotion at 6pm on Saturday.

It is learnt that when the votes for the division chief post was tallied, incumbent Datuk Othman Jais lost to newcomer Shaifuddin Ali Hanafiah.

Othman, 61, in his sixth term, is the longest-serving state assemblyman in Johor.

Branch chief Poninan Panijo said Othman’s supporters were unhappy with the results and demanded that members cast their votes again.

“It was also agreed that after voting, all those who cast their votes for Othman would leave the hall,” he said.

At the end of the voting, it was found that only 28 people left the hall, leading to Shaifuddin’s victory once again, which sparked off the fight after a war of words.

Poninan said that in the fight, punches and harsh words were exchanged.

Social science people like myself know that “race” and other categories are
“socially constructed” (using the awful jargon of academic sociology).
But these socially constructed categories have real world consequences.

Much as we wish otherwise, we can’t deny the reality of racial politics
and racial perceptions in Malaysia and elsewhere. Here’s a thought experiment for you:
Why is Barack Obama perceived as a “black” person when he has a white mother? This is because the social construction of race in USA is such that
a person is deemed “black” if he or she has one black parent.
(At the moment, some Americans who have one black and one white parent are pushing to be recognised as “mixed-race”).

The only way for Malaysia to transcend racial politics is if we inter-marry extensively such that racial categorisation becomes difficult (as in Puerto Rico). This is difficult because of religious barriers that are reinforced by our
laws. So, in the meantime, we can only push for tolerance and mutual respect.

I think I would faint were I to repeat that whole passage of roughly 600 words. But for those who missed it, let me give you an idea of the madness that has crept into our education system by quoting verbatim this one line: “Yang Amat Mulia also is a linguist follow several courses including language Mandarin at the tertiary level, French and Italy language.”

Mind you, this is, believe it or not, the least offensive line, one of the less contemptible ones, and is picked as mere illustration and not meant in any way to further demean Yang Amat Mulia Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Al-Mutawakil Alallahi Shah, the consort of the Tengku Mahkota of Johor, to whom the write-up was dedicated.

It was an advertorial in honour of her. But it turned out to be anything but that because it was written in horrendous and incomprehensible broken English.

An advertorial is an article that is paid for by someone or some organisation to promote an interest or a product. It is essentially an advertisement couched in the style of an editorial or journalistic report.

This one appeared on page 43 of the New Straits Times of Aug 23. It was prepared and paid for by Universiti Tun Hussein Onn to commemorate its conferment of an honorary PhD in Education on ………at its seventh convocation.

  67. giggle says:

    Mercy me:

THE English language was mutilated and murdered in one clumsy cock-up two Saturdays ago. And the worst part was, the whole boo-boo got published most awkwardly in this newspaper.

While everyone is now scrambling to plug the loopholes that led to the muddle, the whole episode has come as a useful reflection, unwittingly exposing many weaknesses of a university of some standing. And with that, perhaps, the whole education system in the country.

It will go down as one of the most appalling bloopers, blunders or bungles of our time, gravely aggravated by the ironic fact that it originated in a respected university and meant to honour a regal personage.

I think I would faint were I to repeat that whole passage of roughly 600 words. But for those who missed it, let me give you an idea of the madness that has crept into our education system by quoting verbatim this one line: “YAM also is a linguist follow several courses including language Mandarin at the tertiary level, French and Italy language.”

    Phua Kai Lit (08:42:29) :

thanks for quick concept on “socially constructed” category.

given these categories will remain for a foreseeable future, the educations (both contents and policies) and all key institutions have to truely embrace tolerance and respect, not just lip service as it suit.

my point is, given we can’t do away with ‘socially constructed” categories, any conscious or subconcious acts/begaviours to amplify them will fall pray to people with ulterior motives. (as it has already occured and still exits).

  69. giggle says:

Had Lee Chong Wei defeated Lin Dan in the Olympic Mens’ Badminton finals, he would have been the first ever Malaysian to have won an Olympic gold medal. Ah, one young man from Parit Buntar, with the hopes of a nation on his shoulders. … But there will still be some things out of his reach. Chong Wei will always be, as distasteful as the phrase sounds, a second-class Malaysian citizen.

Under the current system, his kids will not qualify for most scholarships. If he goes into business post-retirement, he will not be eligible to bid for certain tenders. And when buying houses he will not be afforded certain discounts (although if he keeps getting given houses for winning gold medals, this may not be a necessity).

Funny, isn’t it. An Olympian Malaysians were proud to cheer on every step of his medal winning way, and for all he has contributed to the nation, when it comes to the things that effectively matter – he is sidelined. That is, the politics of race.

Although, the BN coalition consists of several parties representing the main races, it is largely controlled by the Malay-led Umno, while the Chinese-based MCA and Indian MIC play smaller roles.

‘Racial politics has helped to embed racism in our subconscious mind,’ said political analyst Khoo Kay Peng, who believes awareness of racism more than racism per se is increasing.

‘One hand cannot clap. Umno may have created communal politics in this country but its partners in the Barisan coalition have helped to perpetuate it by endorsing the kind of politics Umno is practising. So they too will have to shoulder the blame,’ Mr Khoo added.

Malaysians have also become more vocal about the type of society they wish to live in, thanks to better education, the Internet and consequent globalisation, said Malaysiakini.

    Mr Navaratnam agreed.

‘What has changed the scene is the Internet that has exposed to the world abuses of the rich over the poor across the globe and in our own country. People are smarter, more mature and more questioning. The trends for change will continue with greater steam,’ he said.
