Angry voices from the blogosphere. Malaysia’s Tourism Minister should think 1,000 times before calling all women bloggers liars, cheats and a threat to national unity – on International Women’s Day, 2007. The list also includes humour, analysis and comments about the matter.

It is fantastic to see how ordinary Joe Blogs (pardon the pun) come together to defend their rights to speak up. As this is played out in Malaysia, perhaps bloggers can rise above the novelty and the blogging trend and the right to blog per se, and strive for something more tangible, together?

I have in mind of course, the fight for a fairer, more just and equitable Malaysia. Are all bloggers willing to speak up and fight for that, as hard and as united as their fight for the right to blog has been? I certainly hope so. For then Malaysia would truly be on its way to better days.

Dear Susan, this may be long, but bear with me. You know, the effort you are making here is, under the circumstances, certainly more than just commendable.

But you know the words you put up as the motto on this page – “The world will know that free (women and ) men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and before this battle was over, that even a god-king can bleed” – were never said by the historic Spartan King Leonidas. They were written (after a series of story conferences) by Hollywood screenwriters and delivered (after a serious of takes) by a Hollywood actor in a classical Hollywood period picture which aimed at profit.

Spartans chief motto was: ή τας ή επί ταν. Its spirit and meaning have nothing to do with what you (mis)quote as their king’s words.

What you apparently don’t know, Susan (How could you? Why should you?), is one single thing about ancient Sparta.

It was the least democratic and the most militant of the ancient Greek city-states. 80% of its population (the Helots) did not have any rights and were subject to slaughter by the Spartan youth.

Unlike the rest of Greeks, Spartans had no written laws, no literature, no arts. Moreover, at the age of 7, male Spartan children were taken away from their families to be trained as soldiers. Of course, children born with defects were thrown into a pit called Kaiadas.

Aristotle wrote this about Sparta:”It is the standards of civilized men not of beasts that must be kept in mind, for it is good men not beasts who are capable of real courage. Those like the Spartans who concentrate on the one and ignore the other in their education turn men into machines and in devoting themselves to one single aspect of city’s life, end up making them inferior even in that.”

Hitler, however, admired Sparta and called it the “first people’s state.”

Lastly, Susan, another thing you don’t know is that if a Spartan returned to his city after a lost battle alive he faced death penalty. So, your Leonidas simply didn’t have a choice. He had to get killed at Thermopylae. Otherwise, he would have been killed by Spartans because, having lost a battle, he had brought shame upon.
