Najib failed to convince his audience that he was either sincere or serious .
“At the Malay Consultative Council economic congress just two months ago, he talked about defending Malay rights and that the NEP will not be sidelined no matter what,” an economist with a foreign bank who had attended today’s congress told Malaysia Chronicle.
“Now at the Chinese Economic Congress, he tells the Chinese to spearhead the NEM. What is he talking about – which is to go, which is to stay? The NEM or the NEP – or are both to stay? If that is so, then he must kick-start the NEM. How can the Chinese spearhead something that has no details, no programs? He cannot blame the financial community for thinking that he is speaking with a forked and talking through his hat at the same time.”

Even the International Monetary Fund thinks Najib needs prodding on the NEM. It has asked Malaysia to take “decisive” action on reforms.
“The board of directors agreed that the comprehensive structural reform agenda, at the heart of the New Economic Model, holds out promise of faster and inclusive growth. Further gradual liberalisation of product and labour markets will help exploit policy complementarities, encourage private investment and harness the benefits of reform,” the IMF said in its latest report.
But as in the past, the brickbats and feedback are likely to fall on deaf ears. Due to his own scandal-plagued past, pundits say it may be impossible for Najib to effect any real change at all.
They believe the most that he could do was to hang on until the next general election when they expect him to be ousted either by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Rakyat or by Umno factions led by Mahathir and Muhyiddin.

Felda settlers are finding themselves poorer than ever, claimed PKR.
“For many years, settlers only had to pay RM40 to Felda every month for (oil palm) replanting purposes,” said Suhaimi Said, PKR Felda bureau chairman.
“But (we heard) in July this figure had been raised to RM120.”
According to PKR, Felda settlers are required to hand over RM40 to Felda every month over a number of years.
Suhaimi also told FMT that Felda’s recent “duit raya” payment to its 112,635 settlers did not come from Felda’s coffers, but from the pockets of the settlers.
Felda chairman Mohd Yusof Noor paid himself an annual salary of RM2 million.
After this timeframe, an amount (of about RM17,000) was then returned to the respective settler for them to replant oil palm trees.
PKR alleged that the settlers have only received half of the total amount (about RM8,000) for replanting purposes. The rest, Suhaimi claimed, was taken by Felda.
In a related development, human rights lawyer, N Surendan, claimed that it was against the law for statutory bodies such as Felda to take legal action against its critics.
He also said he had never seen a similar example in Malaysia’s legal history.
“Felda is behaving like an aggrieved individual,” he said. “Can it act this way just because someone is criticising them?”
When asked about Felda’s RM200 million suit against PKR and its newspaper, Suara Keadilan, Surendran said that the case had yet to be filed in court.
PKR also denied charging 766 Negri Sembilan Felda settlers RM500 each for legal advice in the latter’s RM200 million suit against Felda.
Answering to accusations made by Felda chairman Yusof Noor, Sivarasah said that the correct amount was RM50 each.
Sivarasah also alleged that the 766 settlers had come to PKR party leaders before Felda’s alleged bankruptcy was even raised.
Adding that the party had met with these settlers during the recent Hulu Selangor by-election, Sivarasah advised Yusof to be more careful with his accusations and not to politicise the issue.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-president R Sivarasa has accused Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan of committing perjury during Anwar Ibrahim’s first sodomy trial in 1998.
In a report filed with the Damansara Utama police station today, the Subang MP claimed that Musa, then a senior police officer who spearheaded the investigations, had told the court that he possessed a degree in law.
“In fact at the time of the trial, he possessed a diploma,” he told reporters.
“The false statement by Musa was material because it influenced his personal credibility in this judicature hearing,” he added.
Since 24 Mar 2010, Musa is still investigating his diploma.

A startling allegation has surfaced concerning the second corruption charge slapped on Tourism Malaysia director-general Mirza Mohammad Taiyab – he is being persecuted for being clean as a whistle.
