Too dangerous to live.

I am worried for my old friend Dr Rafick, who lives in Bukit Antarabangsa. It seems so scarry, until he has decided to move out.  He sends me a mail, asking me to help him spread the word.

Landslides do not discriminate. Rich or poor, you suffer, if your home is located within these premises.

Rafick says:

“Today, I had ventured down the slopes of Bukit Utama bordering the Athenaeum Condo and Sri Ukay with a friend right to the bottom of the hill. After going down and safely came back up, I wish I had not done that. What I saw makes me an extremely worried person about the safety of my family and neighbours. I am now prepared to move out from Bukit Antarabangsa”.

He adds: Continue reading

Not everyone wants a Mother’s Day

little girl with umbrella

(image)

I know a little girl who doesn’t like mother’s day. I think her world is cruel to force her to celebrate it when she clearly does not want to.

At school, she was forced to make a card for mother’s day. She didn’t want to.

She thought: if her friends wanted to make cards for their mothers, they can go ahead.

But can they leave her alone?

Oh yes, for weeks the TV and papers were going on and on about Mother’s Day.

As if there’s nothing else to celebrate. Over the years, she has gotten used to it. It does not upset her anymore.

She took the piece of paper and started to draw.

“Happy Grandma Day” she wrote, in her ten year old writing. She colored the words in red. Continue reading

Altantuya to contest in Penanti

PGADUAN

My friend Tukar Tiub has a nice joke today. He says Altantuya will contest in the Penanti by-election.

He asks if there is a conspiracy by Anwar Ibrahim. First to let former DCM Fairus resign, and next to get Aminah Abdullah to run as independent.

Altantuya used to be called ‘Amina’ by her father. But overzealous Malaysians think she has embraced Islam. Which is not true.

Mongolians sometimes call their first born daughters Amina to mean ‘my beloved one’. Something like that. Stev Shariibuu explained it to the media when he was in KL sometime back.

Of course, the media ain’t gonna print such stuff.

Anyway, I know this Aminah Abdullah (who wants Penanti) personally. She is a really nice lady. Her husband, too.

Years ago, when Jelutong kampungs used to flood, she and her husband would go all the way to help the poor folks. Continue reading

May egos melt away on Wesak Day…

Happy Wesak Day 2009

(image = a photo I took of a painting displayed in the artist section in Bangkok’s Jatujak Market)

I wish all my Buddhist friends great mindfulness and peace on this Wesak Day and days to come.

On this day and all days,

May we let our egos melt away.

Nothing in life is permanent, anyway.

Attachment is pain.

Desires bring great sufferings.

And the wheel of karma never stops turning.

Today is your day, tomorrow mine.

When does it end?

Revenge is bitter, forgiveness sweet.

So be mindful, peaceful, and loving, my friends.

Do not insult the color Black

jack-black
my hair is BLACK: Arrest Me!
my eyes are BLACK: Arrest Me!
my shirt is BLACK; Arrest Me!
my pants are BLACK; Arrest Me!
my shoes are BLACK; Arrest Me!

their hearts are BLACK: Arrest them!

do not insult the color BLACK
BLACK is the color of justice!

my name is BLACK: Arrest me?

Note:
I wish people would stop saying 1BLACKMalaysia. Black is a good color. It is One BAD Malaysia, friend. and not One BLACK Malaysia, please!
Why do we always see the color black in a negative way? Isn’t it our prejudice and stereotypes to always attach badness to blackness (even when it comes to skin color)? Continue reading

Tangkap! Video of arrest in Penang.

Detainees still no legal access ! Call 03-2274 2222 to demand for their release!

[Video sent to me by Ong Boon Keong].

Activist Ng Eng Kiat was arrested by police in Penang tonight, for illegal assembly, at a SUARAM organised vigil in Penang. I can hear Penang coordinator Lau Su Shi’s voice asking why is he arrested. Brave Su Shi.

Meanwhile in KL, 14 people have been arrested in another round of police madness at the Brickfields police station.

The14 are vigilers who are holding a candle light vigil for detained social activist Wong Chin Huat, held for Sedition.

When inside, the group started singing ‘kami mahu loyar”. We want lawyers. Police as usual want the crowd to disperse and are threatening another round of arrest.

My friend Chuah Siew Eng called the station, someone there assured her that if they wanted lawyers they will have access. Continue reading

Lawlessness and the Perak Assembly

By ALIRAN:

Chaos has descended upon Ipoh and the rule of law has been savaged by the brutish behaviour of Umno Perak State Assemblymen. What we have witnessed today will condemn us for ever for reducing a much respected institution into the law of the jungle. Decorum was not observed and the rule of law was totally discarded.

By refusing to be bound by the rules of the Assembly, the Umno Assemblymen and sergeants-at-arms have demeaned democracy and the democratic process. The same conduct that arrogantly discarded the mandate of the Perakians in the power grab engineered by Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak is at play once again in the state assembly ignoring the sanctity of the assembly and displaying the very arrogance that has no place in this sacred institution.

There was no need to have pushed for this sitting of the assembly when the status and legitimacy of Zambry as Perak Menteri Besar is still in question. This very crucial issue had not been legally settled and yet the Umno assemblymen could not wait for the resolution of the issue. They are bent on taking over the state assembly by any means – mostly by foul means.

The sergeant-at-arms has no authority to disobey the orders of the Speaker. It is not their business to take sides nor to decide whether the instruction given is right or other wise. They don’t seem to know their place or understand their role.

The police have acted in a diabolical manner and did not act professionally and in an impartial manner as they are required to do so. They are seen to be acting pro-Barisan Nasional and in a high-handed fashion in arresting so many people who had not posed any serious threat to the security of the nation. Continue reading

Najib drove police crazy on Altantuya’s birthday

Note: Please see photos of the ‘Cake Which Got Arrested’ at my earlier post, here.

On Wednesday night, PM Najib Tun Razak drove the police crazy with several arrests.

It was the ’6′ of May, and Najib is the ’6th’ Prime Minister. So you can imagine how significant this day is and what it means.

First he told the police to arrest THE BIRTHDAY CAKE, and several others at his Putrajaya office. He later got them to ‘squash’ the cake, before carrying the cake, along with the others, in a police car to the Putrajaya police station.

Then it was the vigilers who stood in solidarity outside the brickfields police station, but awhile later, he told the police to release them all.

I think Najib was really nervous yesterday. Why, oh, why? Relaxs-lah. It was just a cake. It was just a handful of vigilers.

And the vigilers were there for their friend, Wong Chin Huat, who you threw into jail for nothing!  Continue reading

Oh, Rocky! I was right about you!

rockybru-1a

Updated 9May2009: Rocky has his own spin on the Malaysian Insider story.

Amidst all the arrest of social activists and politicians today (just because people wanna wear black tomorrow), Rocky Bru (image left by Wits) returns to the Malay Mail as CEO!

Malay Mail does need you, Rocky! Congratulations!

Said the MALAYSIAN INSIDER, which Rocky claims is ‘Italian-backed’:

“Rocky was named CEO today and Tony Francis will leave immediately. Malay Mail will remain outside NSTP,” an editorial executive with the tabloid told The Malaysian Insider.

“Morale is a bit low as the staff are shocked,” he added, saying the staff had tried to prevent Francis from resigning. Continue reading
