Bloggers declare war on NST

Many have spoken. Look here at kickdefella. When will you speak? Newspapers don’t sue people, they counter write, debate, question, investigate, solicit opinions, comments, publish, circulate. Suing is the weapon used by dictatorships who have big bucks and political veto to cripple the individual financially.

Not all of us may agree on what Jeff and Rocky write. But we believe they must write. And we believe others who also write must be not subjected to the same persecution. This is the essence of free speech, and our believe in it. Why then are some people coming back to me saying they will not support it because they hate the way Jeff writes?

Someone remarked that bloggers do attack others personally and he wonders if he wants to support free speech. He though about himself and wondered what it would be like if he were being personally attacked.

But such approach (personal attack) by some of us is not because of free speech; it is more due to style, approach, attitude, personal ethics, even habit.

Like newspapers too, some are serious, and some frivolous.

So, why put the blame on free speech? Why make free speech a victim, and bloggers the scapegoat?

Jeff used to hit out on the SUN as well. Remember the Gunasegaran case? Well the SUN took the matter to the Complaints Bureau of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum. Here, Jeff counter-complained that Citizen Nades used similar threat (put a gun to his head). It seems the chairperson of the bureau, a former high court judge, was so wishy washy it was frustrating.

He kept saying there are no fixed rules on what can and cannot be published and pushed both sides to compromise to avoid taking the matter to the arbitration committee. The result was a warning ofJeff’s site about posting sensitive material.

There was another instant when Jeff took a jibe at the SUN for missing a Baginda story. Guess what the SUN did? The Editor Chong Cheng Hai wrote an email to clarify, which Jeff published verbatim in his blog and we are all better off because of it.

But what did NST do?

More importantly, what shall we do with it?

Lets hear what people say. You can take some cue from Marina

  1. bravo! let’s start another campaign – Boycott NST! hit ‘em where it matters the most.

  2. “Fourthly, boycott the NST and related publications. Yes, stop subs. Nothing will create greater fear among those guys than if their income drops.” wrote Marina.

    Is there a choice?

Nothing new to me though, having not patronized NST and all its products for many many years already and regard it as worse than the Star which I might buy just one copy a week for its InTech supplement.

Well, if the noosepapers act as proxies to gross misinformation and obfuscation in an Internet Age especially, that is still collusion with the dark Forces – willingly or unwillingly(that becomes a secondary and poor shabby excuse).

  3. i am sure to JUMP , the moments i FEEL CORNERED, watch out !!! no turning back

  4. Yes, while we may not agree with everything that Jeff and Rocky have written, they still must have the freedom to write. And this applies to all.

  5. Let’s have Jeff to be taking care on the new NST, I think he is better than if not equally suits the position to take charge on Balai Berita.

  6. Hit the advertisers .. then you’ll bleed them to death

  7. When you stop reading a paper, the numbers fall and that’s when the advertisers start reviewing their strategy whether or not to advertise there.

  9. With apology Susan but do allow me this space and thanking you in advance. I had this posted at Malik Imtiaz’s blog:

Malik, stay focus. While we understand the need for you to reply to some of the posters here, but don’t waste anymore of your time to engage this bunch of people (those from SiPM and muhammad abdullah). And very soon too, few more other names will crop up here as they did at Rocky’s, Jeff’s, Sheih’s, RPK’s and Marina’s.

We are profiling them. Let us be the ones instead, to engage them, not by replying to their spinning for their masters, but exposing and identifying who they really are.

The sooner we ignore and not allowing them this platform to create chaos and disunity among bloggers, the better prepared we are to face the real issue in hand.

Don’t bother to reply us on this, gang of 4 (or should I add on ‘th Floor’ to it?). Our purpose and function is to sniff you all out.

  10. IMO, to defame something, someone, there needs to be an established reputation, fame, to speak of, first. And this is something to be established beyond the normal dignity that is socially accorded mutually in any civil society. Otherwise any puffed-up dude can simple claim a “dignity” that is actually overbearing self-importance, haha.

What “special dignity” is there with a noosepaper that exudes all characteristics of a condescending talk-u-down Party organ historically and one that spins and obfuscates news selectively all the time?

  11. Susan, perhaps it’s beyond a matter of Bloggers declaring war but perhaps more like “Revolt of the(assumed) Droids” , since the readers of blogs are also equally furious.
