A large section of society finds the coup necessary.

But a small group of dissidents - academics, civil society groups, and progressive students - sees the military takeover as a reverse gear to democracy.

The former group argues “there is no democracy under Thaksin, so what democracy are we talking about”.

Well, the dissidents have gathered in siam center today, a large, upmarket shopping mall, to protest the army coup, and also to say they oppose Thaksin.
